Arkansas sweeps doubleheader from MSU

STARKVILLE — Jamie Pinkerton won 19 games (four in the Southeastern Conference) in 2005 in his first season as University of Arkansas softball coach. Whitney Cloer hit .145 as a freshman in 2006. In 2007, the Lady Razorbacks began construction on a multi-million, state-of-the-art softball stadium. Those stops along the way detail how Arkansas has gone from a perennial SEC cellar dweller to an NCAA tournament team.

 

 

Smith helps organize Madness tournament

For years, Jeff Smith worked for the parks and recreation department and helped children discover and realize opportunities in sports. Now a county supervisor, Smith hopes to do similar things, starting this weekend. Smith has helped organize the Mississippi Madness basketball tournament, a 16-team event for men and women 18 years and older, which will tip off a 6 p.m. Friday at West Lowndes Middle School.

The destination is ... The Mississippi State women’s basketball team hasn’t faced much drama the past five years in March, This year is different. The only drama the Lady Bulldogs will face tonight is discovering where they will play their first-round opponent in the NCAA tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will gather at 6 tonight at the Templeton Athletic Academic Center to watch the NCAA women’s basketball tournament selection show on ESPN. At 22-9, MSU has its most victories since the 2002-03 season, the last time it advanced to the NCAA tournament.

Going into the Blue Devil Classic at Sulligent, Ala., the Lamar County High School baseball team hoped to build confidence for the rest of the season. The Bulldogs accomplished that goal by winning two of three games, beating county rivals South Lamar and Sulligent.

 

 

Former ICC guard will lead Alabama vs. Vanderbilt

University of Alabama men’s basketball junior guard Anthony Brock has shown he can perform in the clutch despite missing practice time. Brock might have been late joining the team for a trip to Knoxville, Tenn., and Sunday’s game against Tennessee, but he still helped the Crimson Tide beat the Volunteers 70-67.

 

 

MSU has plans in motion to switch to adidas

STARKVILLE — Change is in the air at Mississippi State, and soon it will be on the backs of the Bulldogs. With the contract with Russell Athletics expiring, MSU plans to turn to adidas as the school’s clothing outfitter.

 

 

MSU baseball rallies to sweep Valparaiso

STARKVILLE — There was nothing like a little bit of rest Wednesday night to rejuvenate Mississippi State junior baseball players Connor Powers and Russ Sneed. Powers and Sneed combined to go 3-for-3 after coming into the second game of a doubleheader against Valparaiso to help MSU rally for a 5-4 victory at Dudy Noble Field.

 

 

MSU's Johnson will try new plan vs. Georgia

Mississippi State sophomore guard Ravern Johnson had one of his best games of the season Jan. 24 when he scored 21 points in a 67-61 victory against Georgia. Johnson found a hole in Georgia’s zone defense and was 8 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range.
