Blayze Berry is back with a vengeance. If you ever wondered what it was like to miss something you loved, just ask the Heritage Academy sophomore infielder/pitcher what it was like last year to suffer a season-ending medial patellofemoral ligament injury.
STARKVILLE -- The Mississippi State women's basketball team has thrived on punching first and refusing to allow opponents to get up off the mat. But sometimes the sweet science of March Madness relies on subtle adjustments instead of a haymaker that renders the other team helpless.
STARKVILLE -- Dionnah Jackson-Durrett could tell the difference in Morgan William on Monday night. Maybe it's a point-guard thing that allowed the Mississippi State assistant women's basketball coach to recognize the senior leader had a different air about her for the team's second-round NCAA tournament matchup against No. 9 seed Oklahoma State.
STARKVILLE -- Vic Schaefer doesn't often use the word "dominate" to describe an opponent's performance against his defense. That Schaefer used that term when discussing the effort of Oklahoma State's Loryn Goodwin in the Mississippi State women's basketball team's 79-76 victory in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Dec. 3 in Starkville speaks volumes about the ability of the graduate student.
STARKVILLE -- Gary Henderson likes to withhold judgment until the 75 at-bat mark. Henderson's experience as an assistant coach and as a head coach in the Southeastern Conference tells him misleading conclusions come from sample sizes smaller than that.
STARKVILLE -- The Mississippi State men's basketball team spent the first part of the season at home building momentum. Coach Ben Howland's team won its first nine games in Starkville to set the stage for its first road game, which it lost at Cincinnati.
OXFORD -- Kermit Davis was comfortable at Middle Tennessee, but after 16 seasons he was ready for the challenge of leading a program in the Southeastern Conference.
STARKVILLE -- Jim Littell has enjoyed the journey. These days, there aren't very many coaches who have worked at nearly every level of their sport and have climbed to the top of the profession.
The nearly seven-hour round trip to Columbus was worth it once again for Monte Skinner. The late model driver and resident of Mobile, Alabama, made a handful of appearances at Magnolia Motor Speedway in 2017, but he has won two consecutive NeSmith Sportsman races there this season, including the points opener Saturday night.
STARKVILLE -- Adjustments come naturally to Loryn Goodwin. When you have been a part of four basketball programs, you find a way to build chemistry with teammates, especially when you have the ball in your hands as much as Goodwin.
STARKVILLE -- Balance and versatility have been keys to the Mississippi State women's basketball team's success in 2017-18. Each game, any one of the Bulldogs' starting five could have emerged with a big game to carry the squad to a victory.
OXFORD -- Thomas Dillard, Cole Zabowski, and Jacob Adams hit home runs Sunday to lead the No. 11 Ole Miss baseball team to a 5-0 victory against Tennessee.
STARKVILLE -- Keegan James has been a flash of good news for the Mississippi State baseball team. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound redshirt sophomore from Southaven has proven to be a valuable part of the bullpen after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
STARKVILLE -- Sunday was a good day for the Mississippi State baseball team, even though it ended with a loss. No. 14 Vanderbilt completed a three-game sweep of the season-opening Southeastern Conference series with a 4-3 victory at Dudy Noble Field. Still, MSU (10-10, 0-3 SEC) had chances to win the finale after generating little offense in 5-0 and 10-1 losses in the first two games. Tanner Allen's home run Saturday accounted for the Bulldogs' only run.
WACO, Texas -- Quinndary Weatherspoon's 3-pointer bounced off the front of the rim and fell through the net at the buzzer Sunday afternoon to lift the Mississippi State men's basketball team to a 78-77 victory against Baylor in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Junior Kat Moore's solo home run in the fourth inning sparked the No. 21 Mississippi State softball team to a 6-3 victory against Missouri on Sunday at Mizzou Stadium.
STARKVILLE -- After Oklahoma State guard Jaden Hobbs nailed her fourth-straight 3-pointer against Syracuse on Saturday afternoon, she turned to the Orange bench and grinned as she ran up the court.
STARKVILLE -- Oklahoma State guard Loryn Goodwin went into the stands and hugged friends and family after her team beat Syracuse and won its first NCAA tournament game since 2014.
STARKVILLE -- The tapping will reverberate in Humphrey Coliseum until Monday night.
STARKVILLE -- Vic Schaefer needed a jolt Saturday night.
