Here we go, it's time for some region football for MHSAA Class 5A and Class 6A schools.
Columbus, Starkville and West Point began their quest for playoff berths. Each is entering region play coming off big wins.
Next week, Classes 2A, 3A and 4A join the fray.
And now your winners for Week 6:
DeSoto Central (3-2) at Columbus (1-3)
Columbus is looking for its third straight playoff berth. The Falcons have never achieved that height in program history.
DeSoto Central is up first on the Class 6A, Region 1 schedule. The Jaguars have won their last two, beating Lake Cormorant (26-7) and Memphis Central (28-7). DeSoto Central is allowing 13 points per game this season.
Columbus snapped a season-opening three-game losing streak in a 27-7 home win over Vicksburg. The Falcons racked up 400 yards of total offense and played easily their best game of the season. Columbus has seen tremendous growth on the offensive line. That needs to continue.
Columbus routed Vicksburg thanks in part to a fast start. A similar start will be critical Friday night.
Columbus 24, DeSoto Central 23
Starkville (4-1) at Provine (4-0)
Starkville looks to make up for a 4-3 record in Class 6A, Region 2 play last season. The Yellow Jackets only lost on region game from 2011-2015. The quest back to dominance begins Friday in Jackson.
Starkville has won two straight, with convincing victories over Columbus (44-7) and Meridian (40-6). The Yellow Jackets are enjoying some good balance on offense and the defense continues to grow up.
Provine enters this contest, after winning a double-overtime contest with Callaway. The Rams have not been tested early in the season, so this contest will easily be the squad's biggest challenge.
A slow start is possible, because it is difficult to play in Jackson. Starkville will then throw the switch.
Starkville 35, Provine 7
New Hope (3-2) at Caledonia (0-4)
New Hope will try to carry a winning streak into Class 4A, Region 4 play next week. The Trojans close the non-region slate by playing the Confederates on the road.
New Hope played well in its last outing, a 42-22 victory over Aberdeen. For the season, the Trojans are enjoying some balance with 913 yards passing and 871 yards rushing. Look for that to continue.
Caledonia is still looking for its first victory. The Confederates have struggled to generate any consistency on offense this season. It will be difficult to reverse that trend in this game.
New Hope tunes up for region play in fine fashion.
New Hope 42, Caledonia 6
Winston Academy (2-3) at Starkville Academy (4-1)
Starkville Academy coach Chase Nicholson said practice always goes up a notch when district play starts up.
Winston Academy has lost three straight after opening the season with back-to-back wins. The Patriots have struggled defensively in losses to Copiah Academy, Indianola Academy and East Rankin Academy.
Starkville Academy looks to build on its present two-game winning streak. The Volunteers are doing it with balance on offense and a stingy defense. The team's first shutout happened last Friday night in a road win at Magnolia Heights.
Starkville Academy faces Heritage Academy on Oct. 13. The other district games will be setting the stage for that rivalry renewal.
Starkville Academy 40, Winston Academy 12
