As we hit the fifth week of the prep football schedule, there are some intriguing matchups on this week's card.
Columbus will play host to Vicksburg with each team looking for its first victory of the season. New Hope will travel to Aberdeen in a contest where defensive stops will be few and far in between. Hamilton and West Lowndes play each other in a region game.
Starkville looks for a second-straight convincing win when it plays host to Meridian. West Point looks to continue its offensive assault at Noxubee County.
Here are your winners for Week 5:
Vicksburg (0-3) at Columbus (0-3)
A pair of teams needing to feel good again meet Friday night at Falcon Field for the Columbus home opener.
Vicksburg is struggling with a first-year head coach but 30 seniors on the roster. The Gators should be playing better than this. The struggle is on offense where the squad has scored once this season.
Columbus looks to shake off its slow start by finally playing an unranked opponent. The Falcons will continue to improve throughout the season. This will finally be a chance to put some things together on offense. Confidence has been shaken for this team. Maybe, now it can come back.
Columbus wins a thriller.
Columbus 27, Vicksburg 21
New Hope (2-2) at Aberdeen (3-1)
If you are hoping for a final score on the 10 p.m. newscast, you may be out of luck here.
New Hope has gotten things rolling offensively. The Trojans are moving the ball through the air and on the ground. Look for New Hope to start hitting its stride before region play starts.
Aberdeen saw its season-opening three-game winning streak snapped with a loss at Pontotoc. The Bulldogs can score on anyone. However, nine turnovers - like they had against Pontotoc - will not help the cause.
New Hope in a shootout.
New Hope 42, Aberdeen 34
West Lowndes (1-2) at Hamilton (1-3)
Points should be a premium in this MHSAA Class 1A, Region 3 matchup. The loser will fall to 0-2 in region play and be in serious trouble.
West Lowndes looks to bounce back after a hard-fought loss to Leake County in its region opener. The Panthers have only scored 22 points in three games this season.
Hamilton has also had early-season struggles. The Lions will carry a three-game losing streak into this matchup at home.
The West Lowndes defense is slightly better.
West Lowndes 14, Hamilton 6
Meridian (1-2) at Starkville (3-1)
Meridian overcame penalties and turnovers to beat Noxubee County. The Wildcats better not follow the same game plan Friday.
Meridian did rally to a 35-20 win over Noxubee County. It was the Wildcats' first victory after being blown out in back-to-back games to start the season. Meridian appeared a bit slow and unorganized. That better change fast.
Starkville is playing at home and riding the momentum of a convincing victory over Columbus. The Yellow Jackets are finally getting their backfield healthy again.
That is good news for Starkville and bad news for Meridian.
Starkville 35, Meridian 7
West Point (3-0) at Noxubee County (2-2)
Noxubee County will play its final ranked opponent of the season Friday night at home. It couldn't come at a better time for the Tigers.
West Point is back in action after an open date. Time is the only thing that could slow the Green Wave down. West Point is clicking on all cylinders at the moment.
Noxubee County is trying to bounce back from a hard-fought loss at Meridian. The Wildcats do have nice wins over Columbus and Shannon. However, consistency (and the perfect game) is necessary for Noxubee County to have any chance in this game.
Noxubee County will benefit from its challenging non-region schedule. That benefit will not happen Friday night.
West Point 35, Noxubee County 7
