The best way to a region championship is by winning all your games within the region.
Starkville did that in Class 6A and Noxubee County did that in Class 4A a year ago.
Already this season, several teams are off to high-flying stars in their regions.
Columbus, Starkville, Noxubee County and Aberdeen are all beaten in region play. It will be interesting to see how many can keep that up.
Here are five things we will watch for in Week Nine:
Falcons or Chargers
1. Can Columbus move to 4-0 in region play?
Columbus is headed where no other Columbus team has gone before.
At 3-0 in region play for the first time, Columbus is back on the road for a huge showdown with Southaven.
The Falcons will need to play turnover-free ball and play loose as usual to keep the win streak going.
Yellow Jackets or Jaguars
2. How about Starkville - pencil them in for 4-0 as well?
Let's do it.
Madison Central is still trying to get its house in order with Brad Peterson as the new coach.
The Jaguars are 4-4 and have been up and down as that record indicates.
Meanwhile, Starkville is on another planet. The Yellow Jackets are steam rolling hapless opposition. We will see if they can win the first 13 games as they did a year ago.
Bulldogs or Cougars
3. Can Aberdeen pull of a third straight shutout?
Aberdeen has rolled to region shut out wins over Mooreville and Hatley by a combined scores of 76-0.
It is possible the Bulldogs could pull off five straight region shut outs. After all, they are the class of the region.
South Pontotoc is 2-6 overall and struggling to score. No reason to think that will change.
Wildcats or Tigers
4. Don't we love the Louisville-Noxubee County rivalry?
Known as the "Toothpick bowl," the Louisville-Noxubee County rivalry has produced several thrillers since toothpick lover M.C. Miller left Noxubee County to take over Louisville several years ago.
This season, the teams appear to be even again from a talent standpoint.
Louisville is 6-2, while Noxubee County is 4-4. Granted, we know the Tigers have underachieved. This should again be a fun one.
Rams or Rebels
5. Can Columbus Christian grab back-to-back wins?
Fresh off a district win over Deer Creek Academy, Columbus Christian will look to make it two in a row when Carroll Academy comes to town.
Dawson Shaw did it all in last week's win with touchdowns through the air, on the ground and on defense.
He may need to do that again.
