Please remind me again why we need Obama as president. Also, explain how nominating a bunch of crooks to help bring about change is good. No wonder the Democrats don’t mind raising our taxes because, apparently, they don’t pay any.
While reading an article in “The Columbus Packet“ concerning Mr. Greg Andrews, Lowndes County Tax Assessor/Collector, I was wondering if this is the same Greg Andrews that was in the news a while back (year or so ago) that was buying property via tax sales using a proxy buyer?
The so-called stimulus package that is fixing to be crammed down and through all of our orifices and is being signed by President Obama is nothing more than Democrats pushing through program after program that they haven’t been able to do over the past eight years in order to “payback” all of their liberal left-wing contributors that put them in power.
For a decade, Columbus has been talking about building a sportsplex. Meanwhile, neighboring cities like Starkville and Tupelo have benefited from hundreds of thousands of dollars pumped into their economies by such facilities.
I would like to respond to Willis Pope’s letter describing the GOP as losing touch with reality, racist, a voice for intolerant Christian Evangelicals, small hearts, hearts in the wrong place, old and giving power to the already powerful.
In your campaign, you emphasized the need for change, and I want to respectfully challenge you to reconsider your position on the abortion issue, and by so doing guaranteeing freedom and liberty for “the least of these,” i.e., countless lives waiting to be born.
My disapproval notwithstanding, if the Legislature authorizes The W to sell the Carrier Lodge property, it is imperative that the school receives the maximum amount available from ANY willing buyer. This means no private, non-competitive purchase.
I was most pleased to see that Travis Childers and Bennie Thomson voted “YES” on the economic stimulus bill. I, on the other hand, think it most shameful that the rest of the Congressmen from the poorest state in the country voted a big “NO.” What do Senators Wicker and Cochran and Representatives Taylor and Harper think will alleviate the economic crisis in Mississippi? More tax relief to zombie companies, many of whom are insolvent and pay no taxes anyway?
That was a great column on Sunday about Catfish Alley ... and I loved the title!
The Catfish Alley article was interesting. Those tapes should have a lot of history about Columbus during the last century.
I have enjoyed the write-ups on Catfish Alley. I remember the very first Bob's was in Catfish Alley.
In Mr. Bill Parker’s letter, The teaching of science, Feb. 3, he blames “anti-science” movements for crippling teacher’s effort to teach science, especially evolution. I have great respect and admiration for instruments of education like Mr. Parker, who are concerned about the welfare of our children.
I was disturbed to see a full-page ad in Sunday’s Dispatch with the headline “The Obama Abortion Agenda.” The ad blamed the Democratic leadership for targeting “unborn children and their mothers” and made several generalized statements as to what would happen if the “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA) were passed by Congress. It referred readers to a Web site to “learn more.” Much in this ad is misleading, half-truth or patently false.
Rachel Burtram, the Perkerson family and Military Hardware, Jasmine Murray, and county and city officials.
A letter last week from Bob Raymond questioning the origin of the name Catfish Alley reminded me of research a friend did on the subject years ago. The friend, Mark Gooch, is a Birmingham-based photographer.
In response to the difficult and disruptive times we are facing socially and economically, there are three ways to enrich your life, community and the lives of others: Cut back on your spending, build your savings and increase your faith, hope and charitable giving.
Now, more than ever, we need good candidates for public office; qualifying deadline for city elections is March 6
