Every day from 99 days out (May 25) until kickoff, I'll put up a post telling you how many days until kickoff and breaking down something about the upcoming season related to that number.
Today, since we are 53 days away from kickoff, we take a look at: Did you know that in 1953, the Mississippi State football team tied 3 times, the most in program history? Well now you do, and thank God that can't happen anymore. Imagine what would happen if ties still existed.
One of the most diabolical scenarios I found was the 2013 season. That year, MSU ended the season at Arkansas and at home against Ole Miss, went to overtime both times and won both times. Those wins pushed MSU to 6-6, meaning it could go to the Liberty Bowl where it beat the crap out of Rice. What if that season ended 4-6-2 and those ties didn't help MSU get to a bowl game? Not only the bowl game, but two ties at the end of that season would've really changed the entire vibe around the program at the time, given it really needed something after starting 2-3 thanks to two high profile losses in one-sided fashion to Oklahoma State and LSU.
(Plus, could you imagine the disaster in this state if a recent Egg Bowl ended in a tie?)
The real tragedy in losing overtime in the modern era would have been 2000 -- the Snow Bowl. The fantastic sequence of Willie Blade blocking the extra point, Eugene Clinton scooping it and lateraling it to Julius Griffith, all to be the most important play of the game, would have never happened because it came in overtime. Plus, it's a Mississippi school playing a central Texas school in a bowl game where it's snowing, we need as many minutes of that as we possibly can get.
Plus, with ties, you get entirely dissatisfying records like the 4-5-2 of 1993 thanks to a 15-15 tie with Arkansas State and a 13-13 tie with Arkansas, both of those games coming in a three week span.
As a final note, get this: if overtime never existed in college football, for Mississippi State, it all would have been.....a tie. MSU is 5-5 in overtime in program history. Dan Mullen went 3-2 in overtime, so he clearly made some use of it.
