Special to The Dispatch

Starkville Area Art Council's next Art in Public Places Exhibit will highlight artist Laurie Burton. A kickoff reception is 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, March 14 at The Partnership at 200 E. Main St. in Starkville.

Burton works with mixed media and found objects, landscape and surreal painting, and occasional furniture making. She graduated from Mississippi State University where she majored in marketing and minored in fine art. She is the owner of WildRose Studio and Gallery, a renovated 1930s bungalow on South Jackson Street in Starkville. The gallery is open by appointment only. A visit will include Burton's energetic and scruffy little dog, Ripley, and possibly her elusive six-toed cat, Lefty.

Burton's honors include a Merit Award at SAAC's own 2017 Cotton District Arts Festival Juried Art Show, and third place at the 2007 Prairie Arts Festival Juried Art Show. Burton's work has been featured in many exhibitions across the state and was recently featured in a show called "Before Their Time: A Del Rendon Foundation Legacy Series" in the Colvard Student on the Mississippi State campus.

"SAAC's Art in Public Places program strives to bring a gallery experience to Starkville while also introducing artists to the community," says SAAC Executive Director John Bateman. "We want this program to expand and benefit both artists and the community."

Works will be available for purchase. This show will run through April 8.

SAAC sponsors the Cotton District Arts Festival, runs art education programs and awards almost $25,000 each year in grants and scholarships throughout Starkville and Oktibbeha County. For additional information, visit starkvillearts.org.
