Author Michael Farris Smith of Oxford, and formerly of Columbus, will be the guest author Thursday, Oct. 11 at Books and Authors at the Starkville Public Library. He will discuss his writing at noon, with refreshments available at 11:30 a.m. Sponsored by Friends of the Library, the event is free to the public. The library is located at 326 University Drive.
Smith's fictional works -- "The Fighter," "Desperation Road," "Rivers" and "The Hands of Strangers"-- have resulted in a number of awards including the Mississippi Award for Fiction and the Transatlantic Review award, as well as recognition on a number of "Best of the Year" lists in magazines such as Esquire and Southern Living. Smith was also a finalist for the Southern Book Prize and the Gold Dagger Award in the UK.
In addition to his novels, Smith has published essays in The New York Times, Bitter Southerner and others publications. A popular writer, his works have frequently been adopted by book clubs.
Smith's latest novel, "The Fighter," was published in 2018 by Little, Brown and Co. He has just completed a new novel, "Blackwood," which will be available in 2019.
